Safety stops¶
Apathia watches the strategy stop: stop-loss, trailing stop, break-even, and the other loss controls. Each open position can also have one exchange-side safety stop, a resting stop on the exchange that can close the position if the bot is down or paused. Apathia still manages the strategy stop.
The exchange stop¶
The safety stop is placed once, when the entry fills, a little wider than the strategy stop at that moment. A trailing stop, break-even stop, or trailing take-profit does not move it. It stays where it was at the entry. Longs and shorts get the same exchange-side safety stop, and the same not_protected handling if it cannot be placed.
A strategy with no stop gets no safety stop. That shows as none below.
On paper, the safety stop is simulated. If it cannot be placed, that is a warning only, and the entry still opens.
On a live trade, when the safety stop cannot be placed because of minimum size, minimum notional, or a price band, or because the stop is already through the market, the entry still opens and that position stays not_protected. The entry is not skipped.
You can connect and trade on every exchange. On a live trade, the safety stop is placed only when that exchange is on Apathia's safety-stop allowlist; otherwise the position stays not_protected. Apathia still manages the strategy stop on exchanges that are not on that allowlist.
safety_stops_enabled on the account only turns safety stops off. Set it to false and exchange-side safety stops are off for paper and for live. Open positions are not_protected, and the strategy stop is still managed. True, or leaving it unset, follows the allowlist: a live safety stop is placed only on an exchange on that list. This is not the Kill switch: the Kill switch sets every trade to Pause everything and cancels open orders, and exchange-side safety stops stay in place.
Pause new entries leaves safety stops in place. Pause everything cancels them. On resume they are placed again at the same price. If the market is already through that price, the position stays not_protected. The Kill switch leaves safety stops in place.
Protection¶
The app shows a protection state for each open position, with the reason in plain words. A trade shows its weakest position: not_protected, then unverified, then verified, then none. An unprotected position stays visible when another position has no stop. With no open position, there is no protection state.
| State | What you see |
|---|---|
not_protected |
Apathia has not verified an exchange-side safety stop for this position, and one is expected. NOT PROTECTED on the exchange, with the reason. |
unverified |
A safety stop was sent and is not confirmed yet. NOT PROTECTED on the exchange, with the reason. |
verified |
The exchange has confirmed the safety stop is resting. On paper, the simulator has. |
none |
No strategy stop was configured, so no safety stop is placed. A quiet note: "The strategy has no stop: no safety stop is placed". |
A missing status is treated as not protected on the exchange.
While the bot is paused completely, stopped, or without a fresh price, open positions also show NOT PROTECTED: stops are not being checked. That line is about the strategy stop. It is separate from the exchange stop.
Kill switch¶
Kill switch in the Trading Center is the emergency stop for the whole account. On the phone it is Emergency stop. Confirm it before it runs.
It sets every trade to Pause everything and cancels open orders, except exchange-side safety stops, which stay in place. Open positions stay open. The bot stops watching its own stops, so open positions show NOT PROTECTED: stops are not being checked.
A position shows NOT PROTECTED on the exchange unless Apathia has verified an exchange-side safety stop for it. Safety stops kept on the exchange lists the orders left in place. Protection comes only from that verification.
Trades stay paused until you resume each one in the Trading Center. A cancel that fails is listed, and you can run the emergency stop again.
