Install on a Raspberry Pi¶
Apathia runs on a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 4 GB of memory and a 64-bit operating system.
Warning
A 32-bit system will not work. uname -m must print aarch64.
1. Open a terminal¶
On the Pi desktop, open Terminal. From another computer, SSH in with the username and address you use for the Pi.
Check the system:
uname -m
The reply must be aarch64. If it prints armv7l or armhf, install a 64-bit OS (Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit, or Ubuntu for the Pi) and start again.
2. Install Docker Engine¶
Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin from Docker's instructions. Follow Install using the apt repository on the page for your system, and include the docker-compose-plugin package in that install:
- 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS: Install Docker Engine on Debian
- Ubuntu: Install Docker Engine on Ubuntu
64-bit Raspberry Pi OS uses those Debian packages. Docker's separate Raspberry Pi OS page is for 32-bit systems.
When docker version says permission denied, follow Linux post-install so your user can run Docker, then log out and back in.
Both commands should print a version:
docker version
docker compose version
docker compose is two words. That is the Compose plugin.
3. Copy Apathia onto the Pi¶
On your computer, download the package from the Download page. Copy that file to the Pi. In PowerShell, Terminal, or Command Prompt on your computer:
scp DOWNLOAD.zip USER@PI_ADDRESS:~/
Use the file name you downloaded, your Pi username, and the Pi's address (often raspberrypi.local). Put quotes around the file name if it contains spaces.
On the Pi, unzip it. If unzip is not found:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y unzip
Then:
unzip DOWNLOAD.zip
ls
Use the file name you copied. If ls lists docker-compose.yml, stay in this folder. If it lists a new folder, cd into that folder and run ls again. You are in the right place when ls shows docker-compose.yml.
On the Pi desktop you can download the package in the browser instead, unzip it, and open Terminal in the folder that contains docker-compose.yml.
4. Start Apathia¶
From that folder:
docker compose up --build -d
-d runs Apathia in the background, so it keeps going after you close the terminal. The first build takes a few minutes. Wait until docker compose ps shows healthy.
Open the UI on the Pi at http://localhost:8000. From another computer on the same home network, open http://PI_ADDRESS:8000.
The first start creates secret keys in data/ next to the app.
If the Pi is reachable from the internet, do not leave port 8000 open. Use the private UI steps on the VPS / VM page.
